Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: The Movie
Principal photography began May 17 on location in Santorini, Greece, for Alcon Entertainment's coming-of-age adventure The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, based on Ann Brashares' bestselling novel about a special 16th summer in the
lives of four lifelong friends. Directed by Emmy Award-nominated Ken Kwapis (Malcolm in the Middle), from a screenplay by Delia Ephron (You've Got Mail) and Elizabeth Chandler (What a Girl Wants), the film stars Alexis Bledel, Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrara and Blake Lively as four 16-year-old best friends who are separated for the first time. On a last shopping trip together, the girls find a pair of thrift-shop jeans that fits
each of them perfectly and they decide to use these "magic" pants as a way
of keeping in touch over the months ahead, each girl wearing the jeans for a week to see what luck they bring her before sending them on to the next.
The film is set for a 2005 release.

Homer's Tale Comes to Life in Troy
Homer's epic tale, The Iliad, comes to life on the big screen in Troy. Starring Brad Pitt as Achilles, Orlando Bloom as Paris and Eric Bana as Hector the film is receiving praise for its realistic scenes and impressive acting. As the BBC reports, "With more than 2,000 extras, a wealth of historical detail and the imposing recreation of the walls of Troy and the Trojan horse, this is a swords-and-sandals throwback that does not disappoint in its epic proportions." Movie watchers looking for an accurate display of the time period and Homer's work should not be dissapointed.

The Manga Boom
Sales of manga comics are exploding in the United States and surprisingly the largest demographic reading the Japanese comics are teen and tween girls. Comics were more popular among young males in the U.S. before the manga boom. Manga appeals to girls because many of the comics have fantasy and romantic themes. The shojo manga genre of comics are targeted directly at girls. Teens
in general like the comics because they are cheap and very light. The comics are becoming popular with publishers too. Del Rey Books, a division of Random House, recently announced they will be launching a manga imprint.

Bob Dole to Write WWII Memoir
Senate Republican Leader and decorated veteran Bob Dole is publishing a World War II memoir, A Veteran Remembers (HarperCollins) in 2005. A Veteran Remembers will be Senator Dole's most personal book to date. Drawing upon the letters he exchanged with his family during the war, his own memories and opinions, as well as the words and actions of other veterans, Dole will frame the mindset of his generation. In the unvarnished, straight-talking style for which he's known, Senator Dole will describe the battles and the grave wounds he received as a G.I.; his long but triumphant recovery; and his vision of America.
