A Bee Interrupts President Obama's Storytelling Time at Easter Egg Roll

Posted on April 6, 2015

The 2015 White House Easter Egg Roll was attended by 35,000 people today. As part of the festivities, President Obama read his favorite childhood book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

Everything was going fine with the reading, with the children generally paying attention and chiming in when he asked them to roar or make claws with heir hands or make a wild rumpus. He complained that some did not rumpus that hard.

At almost four minutes in, a bee showed up -- and that's when the screaming started. The president saw the bee and laughingly exclaimed, "Oh no, it's a bee!" Seeing that this was not making thing better, he told the children, "That's OK guys, bees are good. They won't land on you. They won't sting you." But the kids weren't buying it. One yelled out "Scary!!!"

The president eventually got them settled down and the reading continued. Everyone roared at the right time, but they were still a little distracted. He told them as he left that as Wild Things they could not be scared of bees.

The White House focuses on children's literacy at the annual event. The First Lady also read to children. The event also focuses on the First Lady's "Let's Move" campaign for children's physical fitness. Take a look:
