Good news for Nook Color owners: Barnes & Noble, Inc.
has released a major software update to the device. The free upgrade (available free
here) will turn the $199 Nook Color into a close approximation of the $249 Nook Tablet.
The update adds 100 enhancements, including access to
top video and music services, popular apps and comics.
Customers will have access to TV shows and movies
through Netflix and Flixster. Other services will be added in the future. The upgrade will allow Nook Color owners to listen to millions of songs using
Pandora, Rhapsody, Grooveshark and MOG. A free 14-day trial is included: those are pay services.
Barnes and Noble was slow off the blocks in the e-reader market, but has been very aggressive -- and successful -- in getting the Nook in the hands of readers. This new upgrade is clearly aimed at people who would purchase Amazon.com's Kindle Fire.
