eBay is seeing some high bids for character names in a unique internet auction organized by bestselling authors to raise money for the First Amendment Project. USA Todayreports that the auction for a character name in an upcoming Stephen King novel ended with a winning bid of $25,100.
Nineteen writers, including King, Nora Roberts, John Grisham, Amy Tan and Michael Chabon, are offering bidders that rare opportunity through an Internet auction at ebay.com/fap.
They are raising money for the First Amendment Project, a non-profit that provides free legal services related to free speech and free press issues.
"The First Amendment has the same role in my life as a citizen and a writer as the sun has in our ecosystem," says Chabon, who helped organize the effort.
The bidding ended late Sunday for King, Chabon, Tan, Lemony Snicket, Dorothy Allison, Jonathan Lethem, Andrew Sean Greer, Peter Straub, Ayelet Waldman and Karen Joy Fowler.
USA Today reports that in round two of the character name auction John Grisham has received the highest bid so far of $10,000. The auctions for a character name in novels by John Grisham, Nora Roberts, Neil Gaiman, Dave Eggers, Rick Moody, ZZ Packer, Brad Meltzer, Chris Offutt and David Brin runs until September 26th, 2005.
