Disney, Weinstein to Adapt Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl for the Big Screen

The L.A. Times reports that Walt Disney Co. and Harvey Weinstein plan to bring Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl to the big screen. Eoin Colfer has described his series as "Die Hard with fairies," which is a very good film pitch.

The Wrap reports that Harvey Weinstein said in a statement that his kids love the book. Weinstein says, "This is a special project for me because my children absolutely love this book. This story is for everyone and there is no one better than Disney to make a film that will excite people young and old."

Michael Goldenberg, the screenwriter who adapted Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, will write screenplays for films based on the first two books in the series. There are eight books in the series about Artemis Fowl, a 12-year-old criminal mastermind, who kidnaps a fairy in book one, so there is the potential for more films beyond the first two. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal will executive produce the project.
