Click here to retun to the Reader's Speak Out homepage.

No, downloaded a y2k program

Rhonda Murray
Kingwood, TX, USA
None. I asked the computer store where I bought my pc if it was Y2K ready when I bought it ten months ago.

George Schoenthal
Fort Worth, TX, USA
I was very calm and waited to see the result of the Y2K bug. Fortunately there were only very minor problems.

Sandra Oliver-Jobling
East Geelong, Vi, Australia
I had absolutely no computer glitches as a result of Y2K. I didn't need to upgrade any of my system software or hardware, but I did backup files on my ZIP drive that I didn't want to lose, just in case. Since it's wintertime where I live now, I didn't have any travel plans, so didn't need to change any. I had a lot of confidence that our utilities in our area were Y2K ready--and they were! I did purchase a small amount of extra food, and also some bottled water. However, I only purchased items I knew I would use later, IF there was no interruption of services in our area. Not having any problems or glitches was a great feeling, and I think it brought the nations of the world closer in many ways as the New Millennium was ushered in!

Naomi Mathews
E. Wenatchee, WA, USA
I did nothing to prepare. A techie friend told me I should have downloaded some patches and that I might have trouble with some software, for example,Word Perfect. The first couple of days were uneventful. Then I started up Word Perfect (Eight). Since then I've been having trouble with several of my internet programmes. They keep freezing and performing "illegal operations" - in a law abiding household, no less. My techie friend is currently away. I guess I'll get help with this on his return. :((

Shirley Gunby
Waterdown, ON, Canada
GPS system in 18-wheeler failed as a result of Y2K. Needed a hardware replacement part.

Elizabeth Reid
Shelton, WA, USA
No glitches. The only precautions I took was to be sure all files were backed up to disk and upgraded to AOL5.0

Angie Mangino
Staten Island, NY, USA
no problems at home. at work (College) we had to reset the date on several computers but all are working fine now

Steve Holden
Manchester, UK
nope....no precautions....no problems...not much i could do..its webtv afterall!

Judy Shue
Summerville, SC, USA
The only Y2K glitch I have encountere dis waiting for some sites to come backup after the Y2K non-event. The only precaution I took was to buy a bottle ofY2K salsa and a bottle of Y2K wine to goalong with the Y2K black-eyed peas my wifeand I cooked on New Years Eve.

Richard Miller
Albany, GA, USA
No problems whatsoever, but then my PC is only two years old. The only thing Idid was to unplug it in case of a powershortage.

Rita Beswick
Thomasburg , ON, Canada
The only problem I encountered involved by CD-ROM version of the 1999 Writer's Market. All of my entries from 2000 accepted the year, but when I checked my entries from 1999, they had all rolled over to 2099!

Renee Heiss
Tabernacle, NJ, USA
I did not experience any computer glitches as a result of Y2K. The only precaution I took was to put my important documents on disk. Other than that I didn't do much else. I felt that Y2K was all hype and I wasn't worried. We didn't even buy extra canned goods. Meanwhile, I don't think people realize that the real millenium is year 2001 - not 2000.

Sabrina Berk
New York, NY, USA
I experienced no glitches, other than noticing that a few of my favorite websites had some minor problems, e.g., showing dates as "01-01-192000". I took standard precautions, scanning my OS and software for Y2K compliance in October and again around mid-December. In that regard, the easiest and most thorough diagnostic scan I used was the one available at the McAfee OnLine Clinic.

Andrew Gettler
New York, NY, USA
no glitches, no real precautions, etc.

Suzanne Lieurance
Kansas City, MO, USA
no glitches...took precautions by upgrading system. Y2K was a joke!

Barbie Perkins-Cooper
Mt. Pleasant, SC, USA
No computer glitches. Checked through AOL and Microsoft that my hardware and software was on line. Backed up Quicken and Word and then went away with friends for an enjoyable relaxing evening.

Mari L. McCarthy
Green Harbor, MA, United States
No problems what so ever. I took all the precautions that I came across....from newsletter sites and from my own virus scan program.

Margie Nichols
Trussville, Al, USA
I haven't experienced any problems as a result of Y2K. I did take a few precautions, such as upgrading software, especially virus, financial, and OS, and shutting my machines down for New Year's. I wasn't too concerned, but there's no sense tempting the Gods.

Kevin Shea
LaCombe, LA, USA
As a computer professional, I was involved inexstensive planning and precautions. Much to my relief all the work proved to be worthwhileas I experienced few if any Y2K issue. Most ofdifficulties stemmed from system that run

Michael OKeeffe
Rotterdam, NY, USA
No Y2K problems. I investigated my computer components to make sure they were 2000 compliant, and made sure to back up my data.

Dawn Stewart
Holliston, MA, USA
I had some serious power fliskers on the Morning of January 1st, resulting in the loss of some 4 hours of work.

Lisa Pantano
Clifton, NJ, USA
I'm happy to say I've seen no problems. I did do a couple checks on my computer to see if it was Y2K compliant. We stocked up on food and water and had some cash on hand just in case. Nothing real drastic since I like to have extra on hand in the winter anyway.

Becky Johnson
Nashville, MI, USA
I did my research, took every hardware and software precaution I knew, and experienced no glitches at all. So whether the Y2K scare was fact or hype, I rang in the new year with all my computers in top shape!

Terri Ker
Lorena, TX, USA
no problems. I did check my computers for y2k problems, but they are new enough to have been shipped compliant.I only took some extra money out of the bank and filled up my gas tank. I really didn't expect any problems.

Patty Curthoys
Neenah, WI, US
I've experienced no Y2K glitches at all. We even flew on January 2nd. I didn't take any precautions other than making sure my computer was Y2K compliant a few months ago.

Ruth Kohut
Camlachie, On, Canada
I checked my hardware and software usingfree programs downloaded from the web and had no problems at all even thoughmy computer is 6 years old. I was amused at the survivalist types whostockpiled water, canned goods andbatteries and know people who bought agenerator, but in this area (as in manyothers) the actual Y2K bug is the flu. Incidentally, we were sound asleep longbefore midnight on New Year's Eve, as weare most years.

Barbara Mitchell
Hallstead, PA, USA
My precautions with my computer were about as involved and technical as my precautions for life. I made sure we had food in the frig--and that everything that was important to me was saved on a disc. That was it! No unneeded generators left on my hands and a computer that's still humming along wonderfully.

Tamra Orr
warsaw, IN, USA
No glitches. I did upgrade my MS software with the service releases from their website. No, I didn't change any travel plans.

Kathy Gresh
Westminster, MD, USA
Although I did experience many of the types of computer glitches many had predicted would occur as a result of Y2K, they were brief, and they were the result of a lightning strike, not Y2K itself. I saved hard copies or floppy disk backups of some files and chose to drive to my weekend vacation destination on December 30th instead of New Year's Eve.

Laurie Stokoe
Champaign, IL, USA
No problems! Yes, I did take precautions. Several software packages were helpful.

Jeff Jones
Lafayette, Co, USA
Claris Emailer (Mac e-mail client) had a glitch that was fixed by a patch suggested on a bulletin board.

Tom Bentley
Watsonville, CA, US
I bought a couple gallons of water and made sure that the karosine heaterswas filled. Other than that we took our chances. No Problems.

Elizabeth Detroy
Pasadena, MD, USA
No, it was all smooth sailing for me. The only precaution I took was to shut my computer down before the magical hour.

Virginia Grammer
Melbourne, Fl, USA
No, I did not experience any computer glitches, but I did what I could so that my computer was compliant. I made sure my flying was completed before 12/31 and for New Year's Eve, I went on a Buddhist Meditation retreat away from the craziness of the hoopla & the only way I knew it was midnight, was that they rang a little bell once.It was so serene & peaceful and I feel very lucky to have started out the year 2000 with that frame of reference.

Adrienne Fermoyle
MtLk Terrace, WA, USA
No, I did download the Y2K compliant software from my computer's manufacturer and my online provider.

Susanne Keener
S. Daytona, FL, USA
No, I have not experienced any glitchesdue to the Y2K. I also feel that the fears of most were unfounded being people go thru this every 100 & 1,000 yrs. Is this being optimistic or what?

Monte Kennedy
Ashville, NY, USA
The great thing about the Y2K scare was that everyone was interested in fixing "possible" problems, particularly with their computer. I decided to hold out and see what would happen, and risk the problems that could occur. As it turned out, I didn't need to take any precautions. And there were no problems to be reported.

Heather Isbill
Sacramento, CA, USA
No problems, no precautions.

Amy Dellacca
Noblesville, IN, us
I haven't experienced any Y2K computer glitches that I'm aware of. The only computer-related precaution I took, beyond normal backups, was to upgrade my BIOS according to the manufacturer's recommendation.

Kathy Grant
Gilroy, CA, USA
No computer glitches. Bought lots of groceries and water. Nothing that could be wasted, though.

Josee Mariann Proulx
Chateauguay, Qc, Canada
I have experienced zero problems and was never really worried about a software problem. That's all the panic was about was software and 90% of all companies were already using compatible software for the year 2000.

Jennifer Figueroa
Beaver Falls, PA, USA
I didn't have any problems as a result of Y2K. I work with computers a lot and heard all the hype, but didn't make any specific precautions. I guess I just figured it would all work out after all!

Elizabeth King
Wilmington, NC, USA
So far, so good. Y2k has thus far been a non-issue as far as I'm concered. Although, I do admit that I bought some bottled water on 12/31 and made sure my shotgun was clean and loaded!

Alan Krawitz
Middle Village, NY, USA
No, I have not experienced any glitches as a result of Y2K. However, we did upgrade the software in our computer as a precaution.

Shelly Monopoli
Vancouver, BC, CANADA
My computer was tested for y2k, and upgraded.

Kalimah Ibrahiim
Scarbrough, TO, Canada
I took very few precautions, and have yet to experience and glitches.

Christopher Oakes
Bell Buckle, TN, USA
No, I have not experienced any issues concerning Y2K. Yes, I did take percautions; I downloaded a system check program which cleared my computer of any Y2K issues.

Jeanne Vickery
Sioux Falls, SD, USA
As a precaution for potential glitches I uploaded all Critical Updates from the Microsoft Update site. Since the roll-over, we have had a slight problem with our computer not wanting to shut down. We'll hit all the right keys, it shuts down, then restarts itself as if it had been prompted to restart instead. The past couple of days, it has begun shutting down properly again. (My son suggested it may be our 'little invisible visitor' come for a spell. LOL).

L. Sabrina DeVaney
Lansing, MI, USA
Unlike popular belief, my computer had no problems at all. I did take some precautions by downloading some y2k tests to make sure that I wouldn't experience any problems. I think that the whole issue was blown out of proportion.

Chauntika Broggin
Upper Marlboro, MD, United States
I'm thankful to say I haven't had one problem on my computer due to the Y2K frenzy. That may be due to downloading Y2K paches for Win98 and Office97. And my printer and scanner seem to have had no ill effect as well. The only Y2K problem in my home is an overabundance of water jugs, canned goods, and toilet paper. But all will come to good use in time.

Patricia Spork
Tatum, TX, USA
No problems whatsoever. I didn't take any precautions because I havea Mac and I've heard it said that Apple took care of any Y2K problemslong ago. Maybe the only precaution I took with my computer was to just not turn it on on New Years Eve. I did, however, decide to stay home on New Years Eve. It was safer, plus no one was available to go out anyway and my fiance was working.

Elaine Richardson
Pleasanton, CA, USA
I received a Webtv as a Christmas gift from my son. Prior to this I used my daughter's in her home. No I did not experience any Y2K glitches.

Elizabeth Peters
Mobile, AL, USA
Not one glitch with my home computer or work computer!! Big hoopla over nothing!

Sue Trice
Pineville, La, US
So, far we have experienced no computer glitches. Of course, if I did I'd probbly think that it was an operator error. The only preparations we did was buy three gallons of water.

Elizabeth Ferree Yuma, AZ, USA
We applied the Win 95 patches but have experienced no problems with any software - what an anticlimax!

Karen Meek
Worcs, UK,
No glitches. Upgraded software was about the only thing I did to prepare besides read anything and everything I could find online about being Y2K compliant.

Michelle DeShong
Junction City, KS, USA
Loaded First Aid for viral scan and Y2K. It froze up my computer and when I did remove the program, it removed some of my startup files. Wish I'd just waited--:-( One of our machines at work was supposed to be Y2K compliant--it was except the date prints out wrong. Needs small kit for adjustment. Guess that's not too bad, huh?

Marcia Banas
Nashville, TN, USA
No precautions. No glitches. Though I didn't expect any, on the 31st a though I should back up my hard disk and document, but I was warm and snuggled in my bed over the cab of my 22ft RV home and was thrilling to the round the world celebration of cultures through music and dance and I just couldn't be interrupted for such wise behaviors. Angels watch over me.

Jean Seley
Pensacola, FL, usa
no. Just that my time of day jumped 10 min.

Annie Ham
Ponca City, OK, USA

Sean Straney
Inglewood, CA, USA
No. No upgrading needed - some technical analysis just to be sure. Main Y2K preparation was to purchase a case of my favorite wine !

Linda Anger
Rochester Hills, MI, USA
No computer glitches have been experienced as a result of the supposedly evil Y2K. While I did not really think anything major would happen, I ran Norton Antivirus and checked my software to make sure it was Y2K compliant. I think people were so well prepared from all the hype that precautions had been put into place, so nothing happened and Y2K went very smoothly.

Lisa Blackford
El Segundo, CA,
NO Glitches. Bought new computer to eliminate possibility of problems.

Michael Hora
Aurora, CO, USA
No glitches, no problems. I have spent the past two months reassuring my mother that nothing awful was going to happen because of the advent of the new millenium, and after a while, I began to believe it myself. Like, maybe my fairy godmother waved her magic wand over my computer, or something....

Nancy Claiborne
Smyrna, GA, USA
I didn't experience any computer glitches as a result of Y2K. The precautions I took included: buying a new mega flashlight, stocking up on candles, batteries and water, and deciding to come back early from visitng my family over Christmas to avoid flying New Years weekend.

Janice Croom
Carrollton, TX, USA
I was in charge of coordinating some of the Y2K efforts at work but did not do anything on my personal PC. My company, a hospital, experienced no Y2K related problems. But, then again, everything was Y2K compliant.

Chicago, IL, USA

Kimberly Rocque
New City, NY, USA
No glitches. Did online Y2K check, but had already upgraded Windows, Netscape, CPU and major software.

Diana Tremblay
Gloucester, ON, Canada
No problems whatsoever. Did not take any precautions with home PC (I have a relatively new Sony less than 2 yrs old so I figured it was OK). My workplace computers were updated to make sure they were compliant and we had not even a pause in operations, including our network computers. All in all, I think it was much ado about nothing.

Nancy Hudgins
Gilmer, Tx, USA
I have experienced modest problems with my computer. It would not switch off. It constantly played "Jingle Bells" and asked for milk of mad cows. Only a good repair effort with a reasonably-sized mallet corrected the problem. So, now my computer plays only Motzart and Brams. Thank you for your attention.

Maya Harris
Northallerton, NY, U.K.
no glitches, had someone check to make sure I was compliant

Sue Reichard

Nancy Furstinger
Margaretville, NY, USA
NO,I did change the date from a two digit to a four digit.

Patty Carroll
Rendon, Tx, USA
I bought a new computer in September, but not because of Y2K. I backed up my files. Couldn't get the ZipDrive to work so did the important (writing/finance) ones to old floppies. We live in the country and are always prepared for power outages, inaccessible egress, etc. Never travel over New Years.

Sharon Tabor Warren

I haven't had any problems resulting from Y2K. However, we chose to stay home and celebrate New Year's Eve, due to the heavier amount of traffic and Millenium parties this year.

Cheryl Burch
Millsboro, DE, USA
I live with a former IS manager so all the computers in the house were checked manually and with three different software programs. The computer I am on right now is dying of old age. I did purchase a new computer just before the end of the year, not because of Y2K fear but for more storage and the need for speed.

Judy Bouchard
Nokomis, FL, USA
No. We didn't take any precautions either

Jenny Krueger
Elgin, IL, United States
My computer needs work, but nothing due to Y2K. In fact, I looked at my old computer dated 1992 which according to the media, should have been a problem. I never touched it as far as updating. It switched over to the year 2000 without any problems whatsoever.

Tami Brummund
Watertown, SD, USA
No problems. My computer was y2k compliant. I did back up everything on my hard drive.

Connie Casserly
Herndon, VA, USA
No, I have an old 486 running Win95, no problems.

Don Carrington
Sparks, NV, U.S.A.
I experienced a slight computer glitch. I have Win 3.1 and I wasn't totally sureif it was Y2K compatable. Well, I didn'thave a problem with anything except theprogram manager. Apparently, when I saveda some of my work, it thought that Word'suse of 1/1/00 was a mistake and interpretedit as being 1/1/80. I was able to correctthis problem easily enough though, and now Idon't have any problems with my computer atall. The only thing I did as a precautionwas save my manuscript to a floppy disk, justin the unlikely event something did go wrong.

Denise Serre
Peabody, MA, USA

Rebecca Foster
Highland, IL, USA
I did not have any Y2K problems with my computer. I had bought a computer that was ready.
