Larry McMurtry Thanks Booksellers in Oscar Acceptance Speech

Posted on March 6, 2006

We agree with Robert Bianco of USA Today that "When the movies are small, Oscar's host has to be huge - and Jon Stewart came through big time." He was funny, smart and managed to skewer the huge collective ego that is Hollywood -- but in a nice way.

Many of the films that were nominated were based on books or short stories. The most passionate defense of books came from Best Adapted Screenplay co-winner, novelist Larry McMurtry, who won for Brokeback Mountain with Diana Ossana. McMurtry thanked the booksellers of the world for continuing to promote the "culture of the book." The Culture of the Book? We like it.
