New Book Examines E.E. Cummings

Posted on November 16, 2004

A new biography, E. E. Cummings by Christopher Sawyer-Laucanno, examines the life of the poet. Cummings seemed to understand that poets were not rewarded monetarily by society. Cummings said, "I make poems because it is the thing I know how to do best. In fact, it's about the only thing I know how to do. America doesn't want poems badly enough to make it a profitable business to be engaged in." However, as the book explains and the Christian Science Monitor discusses in its review Cummings did manage to earn enough to survive from his poetry.
