Warner Bros. Says No to Dark Tower Movie/TV Project

The ambitious film and TV project for Stephen King's The Dark Tower series has suffered another setback. Variety reports that Warner Bros. has decided it will not make the movies and tv shows. The studio did not give a reason for rejecting the project.

HBO, which has had great success with True Blood and Game of Thrones, seems like a perfect place for the project but Variety says this is no longer likely.

A message here on Stephen King's official website says the need for a strong R rating appears to be why the major studios have not taken the project. The site says, "While no single reason was given for the studios withdrawal, it appears that most insiders believe that series would require a strong R rating that would greatly cut into the profitability of creating such an expensive mega-franchise."

The site also says, "When asked about the status of the project, Stephen commented that there is still much interest in the project and that news regarding the series should be announced this fall."

Deadline offers some hope with a report that Media Rights Capital is in serious talks to take on the project.
