Welcome to Night Vale Creators Ink Book Deal With HarperCollins

Posted on December 28, 2013

After a heated auction HarperPerennial just snapped up the rights to the popular podcast Welcome to Night Vale which was created by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor. The podcast is in the style of a radio show about the fictional community of Night Vale. The broadcasts are anchored by popular host Cecil Baldwin who shares news, announcements, weather reports and advertisements. Night Vale is no ordinary little town. In fact, some very strange things go on in Night Vale. It's more like a town dreamed up by Stephen King.

Fink and Cranor will write a novel based on the series which is scheduled to be published in 2015. The podcast is release twice monthly and hit #1 on the iTunes Comedy list last summer. Wired magazine referred to it as "Lake Wobegone by David Lynch."

HarperPerennial editor Maya Ziv acquired the rights. She had this to say about the project: "Anyone who listens to just one podcast immediately envisions a book by Joseph and Jeffrey. Harper Perennial is so incredibly honored to bring the first Night Vale novel to hundreds of thousands of loyal listeners, as well as countless new fans and readers. The opportunities with this project are exciting and endless."

HarperPerennial normally publishes paperbacks, but is making an exception. The novel will be released in hardcover format which the publisher says will have innovative design and packaging. We'll be very interested to see what happens next in the desert town where pretty much anything is possible.
